Beware of the Hidden Horrors of Hypocrisy (Luke 11:53-12:3)

Dr. Deric Thomas

[53] As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, [54] lying in wait for him, to catch him in something he might say. [1] In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. [2] Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. [3] Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

[6] …”Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; [Mark 7:6 ESV]

[20] So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor. [Luke 20:20 ESV]

[33] Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” [1Cor 15:33 ESV]

[9] Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. [Rom 12:9 ESV]

[17] But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. [James 3:17 ESV]

[1] So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. [1Pet 2:1 ESV]

[14] For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. [Ecc 12:14 ESV] [16] on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. [Rom 2:16 ESV] [5] Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God. [1Cor 4:5 ESV]
