Be Rich……..Toward God (Luke 12:13-21)

Dr. Deric Thomas

[13] Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.”
[14] But he said to him, “Man, who made me a judge or arbitrator over you?” [15] And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” [16] And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man produced plentifully, [17] and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ [18] And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. [19] And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”‘ [20] But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ [21] So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

[18] …remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth… [Deut 8:18 ESV] [22] A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children… [Prov 13:22 ESV]

[10] He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity. [Ecc 5:10 ESV] [17] As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who

richly provides us with everything to enjoy. [18] They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, [1Tim 6:17-18 ESV]

[4] Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. [5] When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven. [Pro 23:4-5 ESV]
[10] For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. [1Tim 6:10 ESV]
[8] Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, [9] lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God. [Prov 30:8-9 ESV]

[8] And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” [Luke 19:8 ESV]
